Snežana Stamenković was born in Belgrade (Yugoslavia). She studied singing at the university there with chamber singer Biserka Cvejić. In 1986, she was awarded 2nd prize at the International Singing Competition for Song and Opera in Zagreb. After graduating, she received the Danica Mastilović Award and the Bahrija Nuri-Hadžić Award for the most talented singing graduates and spent two years as an assistant to Mrs Ks. Cvejić at the University of Arts in Belgrade for two years.
At the ‘Concours International de Chant Mme. Mady Mesplé’ in Nantes in 1987 she won the first prize and the FIDOF prize for the best interpretation of songs and Mozart. She made her debut at the Belgrade National Opera in 1987 as Susanna in ‘The Marriage of Figaro’. This was followed by engagements in Zagreb as Ilia (in Mozart’s ‘Idomeneo’ – the first performance of this opera in Yugoslavia), Susanna in Ljubljana etc.
From 1990 to 1992 she was engaged at the Stadttheater Trier and from 1992 to 1997 at the Stadttheater Bern. In the 1997/98 season she began her engagement at the Leipzig Opera where she sang roles such as Micaëla, Mimi, Tatjana, Pamina, Donna Elvira, Contessa (‘Le Nozze di Figaro’), Marie (‘The Bartered Bride’).
Snežana Stamenković has been a freelance singer and professor of singing and vocal literature at the State University of Music and Performing Arts in Mannheim since April 2001.
She has also been the head of the vocal department there since 2007. Students and graduates of her singing class in Mannheim are laureates and prizewinners at the most important international singing competitions such as ‘Konigin Elisabeth’ in Brussels, ‘Hertogenbosch’ (Holland), ‘Concours International de Chant Touluse’ and ‘Marmande’, (France), ‘Feruccio Tagliavini’ in Graz, ‘Antonín Dvořák’ in Karlovy Vary, ‘I grandi Voci’ in Salzburg, ‘Junge Musiker’ in Oldenburg, ‘Amici della Musica’ and “Maria Caniglia” Italy etc., and sings at opera houses such as “Teatro municipale del Roma”, “Deutsche Oper Berlin”, “Oper Essen”, “Bolshoi Theatre Moscow”, “Chamber Opera Moscow”, “National Theatre Mannheim”, “State Opera Nuremberg”, “State Theatre Hanover”, “Opera Strassbourg”, City Theatre Dortmund, Bremen, Bielefeld, Aachen, Kaiserslautern, Hildesheim, Trier, Heidelberg, Pforzheim etc.
Snežana Stamenković has performed opera and concert repertoire in Zurich, Chur, St. Gallen, Leipzig, Hanover, Dortmund, Bonn, Kassel, Chemnitz, Erfurt, Warsaw, Antwerp, Nantes, Athens, Linz, Innsbruck and Belgrade, among others.
She has worked with directors such as Hores, Kirchner, Konwitschny, Trelinsky, Gramss, Neuner, Brieger; conductors such as Ralf Weikert, Hans Wallat, Miguel Gómez Martínez, Michail Jurowski, Jiří Kout, Julius Rudel, Rudolf Werten, Lothar Zagrosek, K. Kaspšyk etc….
Her repertoire includes operas by Mozart, Bellini, Rossini, Donizetti, Verdi, Pucini, Leoncavallo, Wagner, Smetana, Dvořák.
