history
A house with history –
and music in every fibre
The Forum Artium is housed in a listed villa from the Wilhelminian era, once the factory manager’s house of a steelworks. Today it is a lively place of learning, exchange and musical encounters.
The stylishly restored chamber music hall forms the centrepiece of the building. A special atmosphere unfolds here on around 100 square metres – characterised by wooden floorboards, high windows, a grand bay window and historic chandeliers. A room that inspires – for rehearsing, making music and concentrating.
Living, working and working under one roof:
The Forum Artium offers space for up to 20 guests – in eight individually designed rooms with en-suite bathrooms. Several bright rehearsal and seminar rooms as well as its own library make the house a perfect place for intensive artistic work.
The in-house kitchen takes care of your physical well-being – with breakfast, lunch, coffee and cake as well as dinner in a cosy atmosphere.
Whether a masterclass, ensemble rehearsal or creative break: the Forum Artium also opens its doors to external groups looking for an inspiring environment for musical or cultural projects.
the founder

The founder Herbert Vieth
Herbert Vieth (†2024) was a musician, conductor and visionary. After studying school and church music as well as conducting in Cologne, Aachen and Frankfurt – with Helmuth Rilling, among others – he initially worked as a cantor at the basilica in Rheine. As a soloist, ensemble member and conductor (including with the Bach-Collegium Osnabrück and the Norddeutsches Vocalensemble), he has performed in Germany and abroad, including in England, Italy, Israel, Russia and the Netherlands. He has also been involved in numerous radio, television and recording productions.
In 1988, Herbert Vieth realised a pioneering idea: he founded the FORUM ARTIUM – an academy for musical excellence in Georgsmarienhütte, which still attracts artists from all over the world today. With great commitment and vision, he laid the foundations for a place for artistic encounters, international exchange and the promotion of young talent at the highest level. In the same year, he also launched the Festival Tage Alter Musik, which was later continued as MUSICA VIVA.
In 2005, Herbert Vieth was honoured with the Cultural Award of the Osnabrücker Land Regional Association for his extraordinary cultural work. His idea lives on in the Forum Artium – as a legacy and inspiration.
