Prof. Christoph Prégardien

“Christoph Prégardien performs true miracles here, and anyone who has once heard his all-consuming, absolutely pitch-perfect interpretation of Schubert’s ‘Nacht und Träume’ will no longer be able to resist.” Fono Forum

His clear and precise vocal line, as well as his intelligent diction, combined with the ability to enter into the psychological core of a role, make Christoph Prégardien one of the most distinguished lyric tenors of our time. His work as a lieder singer is particularly highly esteemed.

Christoph Prégardien frequently appears as a soloist with major international orchestras. He has performed with the Berlin and Vienna Philharmonic Orchestras, the Royal Concertgebouw Orchestra Amsterdam, the Philharmonia Orchestra London, the Orchestre Philharmonique de Radio France, as well as the Boston and San Francisco Symphony Orchestras, and has collaborated with conductors such as Barenboim, Metzmacher and Thielemann. His orchestral repertoire includes not only the great oratorios and Passions of the Baroque, Classical and Romantic periods, but also works from the seventeenth and twentieth centuries. His operatic roles include Tamino, Almaviva in Il barbiere di Siviglia, Fenton in Falstaff, Don Ottavio, Titus, Ulisse and Idomeneo.

His many years of experience performing the great Evangelist roles and his close collaboration with conductors such as Nagano, Chailly, Herreweghe, Harnoncourt, Luisi and Gardiner have provided Christoph Prégardien with the ideal foundation to approach this repertoire as a conductor as well. Since the international success of his conducting debut in 2012 with Ensemble Le Concert Lorrain and the Nederlands Kamerkoor, he has regularly directed renowned ensembles including the Balthasar Neumann Ensemble, the Dresdner Kammerchor, Collegium Vocale Gent and the RIAS Kammerchor.

The singer has documented a large part of his repertoire on more than 150 recordings, which have received numerous awards, including the Orphée d’Or of the Académie du Disque Lyrique, the Edison Award, the Cannes Classical Award and the Diapason d’Or. On the Challenge label he released Schubert’s Schwanengesang with Andreas Staier and Die schöne Müllerin with Michael Gees, both distinguished, among others, as Editor’s Choice by Gramophone magazine and with the MIDEM Record of the Year Award. Further releases include Hugo Wolf’s Italienisches Liederbuch with Julia Kleiter, Between Life and Death, Wanderer, the Grammy nominated new recording of Winterreise with Michael Gees, and Father and Son with his son Julian Prégardien. The Schubert album Poetisches Tagebuch with Julius Drake received the German Record Critics’ Award in 2016. Among his most recent releases are a recording produced in collaboration with the Warsaw Chopin Institute, featuring songs by Paderewski, Moniuszko and Duparc with Christoph Schnackertz, as well as a new recording of Schubert’s Schwanengesang and Schumann’s Liederkreis Op. 39 with Julius Drake.

An important aspect of Christoph Prégardien’s musical life is his pedagogical work. After several years at the Zurich University of the Arts, he taught as Professor at the Cologne University of Music and Dance from 2004 to 2023. He continues to be active in teaching through masterclasses worldwide.
