After studying piano with Bernd Glemser and bassoon with Albrecht Holder in Würzburg, he worked as solo bassoonist at the Hamburg State Opera for 14 years. In addition, his musical personality developed through guest appearances with conductors such as Gerd Albrecht, Daniel Barenboim, Christoph Eschenbach, Bernhard Klee, Nicola Luisotti and Kurt Masur. Last but not least, Zubin Mehta, Kent Nagano, Kirill Petrenko, Donald Runnicles and Simone Young.
In 2010 Christian Kunert acquired a professorship for bassoon at the “Hochschule für Musik und Theater” (HfMT) in Hamburg. He continues to appear as a sought-after solo bassoonist as well as a renowned conductor.
Today Christian Kunert is an internationally renowned bassoon virtuoso. His fascination by the works of Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart, Giuseppe Verdi and Richard Strauss, related to opera is met by the works of Mahler and Bruckner in classical symphonies. What remains important for him are technical skills. He views them as the fundamental key of expressing the deeper meaning of compositions.
