Christian Wetzel is Professor of Oboe at the Cologne University of Music.
In addition to his teaching and international solo activities, he devotes himself intensively to chamber music and performs at major festivals worldwide.
He is an oboist and founding member of the renowned Ma’alot Wind Quintet, with which he has won numerous international first prizes, including at the ARD Competition in Munich. The ensemble can look back on a concert career spanning more than 30 years and has made a number of award-winning CD recordings.
After nine years as principal oboist with the Mannheim National Theatre Orchestra, he was awarded his first professorship at the Leipzig University of Music in 1997 and has since worked intensively and successfully with the next generation of international oboists.
In 2008 he was appointed to the Cologne University of Music.
Many of his students have been given prominent positions in major orchestras around the world.
Christian Wetzel teaches at numerous international masterclasses worldwide and as a guest lecturer at such important music institutes as the Royal Academy of Music in London, the Julliard School in New York, the Vienna Conservatory of Music and the Chinese Central Conservatory in Beijing.
He also leads an oboe class at the Basque Country Music Academy, ‘Musikene’, in San Sebastian/Spain.
Numerous recordings, world premieres and close collaboration with important contemporary composers also demonstrate his commitment to ‘new music’.
