Winner of first prize at the 20th International J.S. Bach Competition in Leipzig, Paolo Bonomini is currently principal cellist of the Camerata Salzburg and professor of cello at the Hochschule für Musik Detmold.
A versatile musician, he performs regularly as a soloist, chamber musician and principal cellist with various orchestras in prestigious venues including the Konzerthaus Wien, Wigmore Hall, Enescu Festival, Konzerthaus Berlin, Elbphilharmonie, Philharmonie de Paris, Heidelberger Frühling, Salzburg Festspiele, Sommerliche Musiktage Hitzacker, Festspiele Mecklenburg-Vorpommern.
As a soloist, he has appeared with ensembles such as the Camerata Salzburg, the Camerata Bern, the Sinfonie Orchester Biel, the Pauliner Kammerorchester, and the Odessa Chamber Orchestra.
As guest principal cellist, he has collaborated with the Orchestra dell’Accademia Nazionale di Santa Cecilia, the Deutsches Symphonie-Orchester Berlin, the Mahler Chamber Orchestra, and the Münchener Kammerorchester. He collaborates in the same role with the Camerata Bern and the Deutsche Kammerphilharmonie Bremen. He has collaborated with the Symphonieorchester des Bayerischen Rundfunks, the Lucerne Festival Orchestra and under the baton of Claudio Abbado, Mariss Jansons, Riccardo Muti, Riccardo Chailly and Herbert Blomstedt.
He is a founding member of the Trio Boccherini, a string ensemble with which he has recorded Beethoven’s complete trios for Genuin Classics and a CD dedicated to Hungarian music for string trio for the BIS label. Also for BIS, in 2026 the Trio Boccherini will release an album dedicated to Franco-Belgian music.
He teaches masterclasses at the Scuola di Musica di Fiesole and has been professor of cello at the Hochschule für Musik, Theater und Medien in Hanover, as well as assistant to Jens Peter Maintz at the UdK in Berlin, and assistant to Antonio Meneses at the Hochschule der Künste in Bern. He regularly holds masterclasses at international and other institutions, including the Real Conservatorio de Música de Madrid, the Conservatorio Superior de Música de Aragón, and the conservatories of Trento and Bari.
Always interested in philological research, Paolo Bonomini edited the critical edition of Tommaso Giordani’s “Six Sonatas for Two Cellos”, published by Armelin Musica.
